Disney Mean Girls

Alternative Title: Entertainment until I get a chance to post something real...

Was made aware of this yesterday by one of the Navy wives. As I learned after trying to make NavyGuy watch it, it won't nearly as funny if you haven't seen Mean Girls.

Seriously - this is why so little gets done around here...

My Thursday morning...

7:00am - Alarm goes off.
7:09am - Snooze.
7:18am - Snooze.
7:27am - Snooze.
7:36am - Finally get up.
7:37am - Watch a little Today Show.
7:52am - Turn it off when Ann Curry is allowed to speak.
8:00am - Remember that I wanted to make a card for the Poppy Seed Challenge.
8:02am - Rummage through already-made cards and see if anything can be used as a starting point.
8:10am - Realize I'm woefully short on birthday cards.
8:11am - Peruse stamps to see what birthday stamps I have.
8:15am - Remember original purpose for being in the craft room before 9am in my pajamas.
8:16am - Refocus.
8:17am - Work on Poppy Seed card.
8:38am - Set up area to take photograph of card.
8:39am - Search through the house for NavyGuy's good camera.
8:42am - Realize he probably has it in his car, or has just hidden it from me because I tend to forget to put the memory card back in it, and then when he wants to use the camera, he has to retrieve the memory card from my laptop...
8:43am - Finally take a photo of my card using my camera
8:45am - Upload card to computer.
8:46am - Futz with lighting in the photo.
8:50am - Decide that in the photograph, the yellow on my card looks orange, and therefore, I have to make a new card so there's no doubt I have yellow on my card.
9:15am - Finally finish making second card for the challenge.
9:16am - Do another hunt for the good camera just in case I missed it during my first sweep of the house.
9:20am - Admit camera defeat.
9:21am - Reconfigure set-up for photograph so there's no lighting issues this go-round.
9:23am - Upload card to computer.
9:26am - Edit photo and decide lighting is satsifactory.
9:27am - Write blog post for photo.
9:36am - Debate whether blog post makes me sound like a crazy person.
9:38am - Realize that's a moot point.
9:40am - Publish blog post.

There you have it. Almost three hours. And that was a three hours that actually produced some sort of tangible results!

Debate of the Day

Cute or not? These teacup pigs were featured on last night's episode of How I Met Your Mother. I cooed, NavyGuy gagged. Which led to a serious debate. And many cries of "I want a teacup pig!"

Even now as I type this...

NavyGuy: You are NOT putting up a post about those god damn pigs!

NavyWife: Oh hell yes I am! I have to prove they're cute!

So? Vote early and often.

Weekend Update

*NavyGuy's back from Red Flag! He returned on Friday night, so we went out to dinner, and then he promptly crashed. Two weeks of night flights and the Vegas lights had taken their toll, and poor NavyGuy was worn out.

*With Tally pup off at training, we could spend Saturday out and about (without having to rush home to let puppy out). Thus, we planned to go to Lynnwood and do some shopping at the big mall, catch a movie, have dinner, and generally relax. Well, we made it as far as the highway when NavyGuy got a call that he had to head down to Oak Harbor and take care of some admin business for the squadron, since all of the higher ups were still in Vegas. 90 minutes after we'd planned to leave, we finally hit the road and made it down to the big city. All in all it was a fun Saturday - some scrapbook store time, a movie, dinner at Macaroni Grill, and some quality time with my NavyGuy :)

*SuperBowl Sunday! NavyGuy and I headed over to a friend's house for a low-key super bowl afternoon. I brought chocolate chip cookies (which I made with slight supervision by NavyGuy... I neglected to soften the butter initially, so then I wanted to microwave the metal bowl it was in to make the mixture a little easier to stir... that's when he got all nervous and felt compelled to babysit my cookie project), and we snacked on wings, taco dip, cookies, and beer. Not even a little bit healthy, but oh-so-footbally. Hooray for the Saints (and Betty White's awesome commercial). Our trip home was more eventful than expected though... we got a bolt in the rear passenger tire. So, I got a tire-changing lesson in the garage at 8:00 at night...

(photos and NavyGuy's commentary to come...)

What's on tap for this week? Tuesday night is a massive pre-deployment meeting for the entire squadron, Thursday is our wives' club meeting (at our house!), and Friday night we jet back to Wisconsin for a week of visiting friends and family! Lots of excitement to come...

My final say for the day...

Whew! A very productive blogging day if I do say so myself. There are a few more stories from the weekend that need their telling, but I've made a significant dent in the list. I'll leave you with a few random snippets...

*I have to go back to work tonight. In fact, I'm probably steaming milk or cleaning dishes while you read this. It should go without saying that I'm not happy about this fact. I've been off since last week Thursday and it's been blissful. The only coffee I've been in contact with has been sipped out of my own cup while standing on the customer side of the counter.

*Tally pup doesn't have worms. The vet called NavyGuy today and little girl is a-ok. Guess the $80 in tests and medicine was totally worth it.

*There will be bathroom re-do photos coming soon. I got bored already with NavyGuy gone and me home alone, so I decided to redecorate the upstairs guest bath (not a good precedent to set I know, but such is life). It's going to look super awesome, just wait!

*I'm hosting my first spouses' club meeting next week. Very nerve-wracking. Luckily I can put NavyGuy to work helping me get the house ready, but I still need to create an evite, come up with some food ideas, and decide on an outfit that screams, "casual, sophisticated, and effortlessly gorgeous, yet won't show sweat stains or any possible food spills."

*Is it wrong that I'm already really excited to go back to Wisconsin in a few weeks?

A Little of This and a Little of That...

*All Christmas packages are in the mail. I got up at 5am today, finished wrapping everything, and was in line at the post office by 9. And it wasn't even horrific. I got the good postal worker man (who hooked me up with a sweet sweet media rate for a few of the packages), and was out of the building in under 15 minutes.

*When making quiche, the milk and eggs must be whisked together thoroughly. Failure to do so will result in a husband being sent to pick up burritos for dinner.

*NavyGuy starts his holiday leave today. On the plus side, this means he's home to play with the dog everyday and work on a honey-do list. On the less plus side, this means he's home all day. I predict many Nova and Good Eats marathons broken up by bouts of computer gaming and general lounging.

*Monday night was another squadron holiday party. This time both officers and enlisted sailors were invited. It was at the O'Club, and it was... interesting. Some people were in cocktail dresses; some people were in jeans and "fancy" t-shirts. The party was essentially, "come, pay for overpriced drinks, eat a so-so buffet of lukewarm food, and try to act interested when they announce the raffle prizes for all the enlisted guys..." I muddled through the evening in a Chardonnay-induced haze and managed to snake an extra piece of chocolate cake. They did have nice party favors - sturdy wine glasses etched with the squadron logo (keep in mind "nice"is a relative term).

*Still to be done before family arrives on Monday: clean house, finish holiday decorating, finalize Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus, bake cookies, wrap more gifts... hmmm... that list doesn't sound quite long enough... I must be forgetting something...

SSB

Sex in the City fans out there might remember this acronym. It comes up in a discussion about living with a boy, and it stands for "secret single behavior." It's the stuff girls do (or, guys I guess, but it seems like girls have more of this kind of weirdness) when they live alone, or when their significant other is gone. In honor of my two week singledom, I thought I'd let you guys in on a few of the SSBs that have been going on around here in NavyGuy's absence...

*There may or may not be dinners consisting of microwave popcorn, Diet Mt. Dew, and ice cream sandwich(es).

*I definitely have taken over his side of the bed... with my stuff. Whenever he's gone (and really, for years before him) I'd use the empty space on the other side of the bed as my additional nightstand space. Since my actual nightstand is overflowing with water glasses, cell phone, books, hair tie, extra hair tie, current book, lamp, etc., it's helpful to have his side of the bed to keep additional reading materials (magazines that I'm too lazy to go put back in a decorative box intended for their storage), sundry remote controls, the house phone (wise to have a backup phone nearby in case an intruder manages to startle me and I knock my cell phone off my nightstand and it falls too far underneath my bed for me to retrieve it and dial 911...), extra pen and paper... and the list goes on and on. It's always a bit of an adjustment when NavyGuy returns and I have to figure out how to re-cram everything onto my nightstand again. (But don't worry dear, I'd much rather have you on that side of the bed than my remotes... I think...)

*There's a chance that I've spent a bit of time rewatching Glee episodes on Hulu, and/or singing along with the songs... at the top of my lungs... working my Mariah hands... and learning the dance moves.

*I snooze. I mean, I literally set my alarm for thirty to 45 minutes before I need to even think about getting up, just so I can hit the alarm clock and go back to sleep. NavyGuy hates my alarm clock and wakes up at the drop of a hat, so I try not to do it when he's around. But I just love it. I know, it's really weird. But I fall right back asleep and it's so nice to wake up, oh wait, nope! Don't have to get up yet!

Alright ladies - spill! What crazy secret single behavior are you ready to let out of the closet?

Saturday

So my first day of "singledom" didn't get off to a roaring start as planned. NavyGuy left at 4:30am, and I had stupidly asked him to wake me up when he left so we could say goodbye... thus, my day started pretty early.

By 9am, I had progressed through several TiVo'ed shows from the week (So You Think You Can Dance, Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Top Chef, and The Office... yes, I have amazing television viewing stamina). However, my shopping plan was diverted because it was nasty outside - rainy, misty, foggy, windy - just generally icky. A much better day to spend curled up on the couch, reading, etc.

I did manage to finish one project - cutting out five sets of calendar letters. TWP is making photo calendars for several of her relatives' Christmas gifts this year, and bribed me into making the month letters using my Cricut. (I was actually happy to do it, cuz I love me some alone time with my Cricut.)

NavyGuy arrived in California unscathed. Apparently, he got put on duty watch immediately upon arrival, so he spent the rest of the day shuttling people around from one airport to another (duty watch on these types of mission is less securing the base and more "general group bitch," typically revolving around chauffeuring). NavyGuy was not thrilled. But he's excited to get flying and complete some of his requirements.

Tomorrow's big excitement? I'm going to visit our puppy!!! She'll be six weeks old tomorrow, and the breeder said we were welcome to come out and play with the little ones before we officially bring her home in two weeks. If all goes well, I'll hopefully have some pics to show off... I really hope our pup likes the camera!

Feeding the Obsession

Anyone who knows me in real life knows I have a few ticks. Idiosyncrasies. Charming quirks.

Some call them neuroses.

Clearly, though, based on this new website - I Am Neurotic - I fall in the middle of the spectrum when it comes to crazy. The website collects submissions from readers, who spill their personal neuroses (such as, "If I get an individually wrapped candy like Starburst, I have to unwrap them all before I eat them" or "I always wear a bike helmet when cycling. Not because I am afraid of injuring my head, but for fear that if I end up in a hospital the doctor will not try and save me if I wasn’t wearing a helmet").

In that spirit, I figure it's only fair for me to share one of mine:

"I cannot step on a wet bathmat. When I exit the shower, I dry each foot off individually, and then step on the mat. I hate the feeling when the nice soft bathmat has random wet patches from feet. If NavyGuy showers first and smashes his large wet feet all over the bathmat, I have to walk around it when getting out of the shower, because putting my foot on that wet fabric makes me want to upchuck."

Step up to the plate friends... what's one of your neuroses?

Photo Diary: Thursday

NavyGuy, breakfasting in the early morning, after taking our truck to the car shop. Yes, the donut is pink :)
Puppy preparations are in full swing. NavyGuy's parents sent us a little care package with this fabulous Ikea leash holder.
NavyGuy checking his computer game status the news of the world before heading off for a full day on base.

A balanced lunch is the key to a productive afternoon.

A DIY project in the works.Mom's brilliant suggestion of where - and how - to store a couple of my aprons. Close to the kitchen, but not right out in the main room. And a great use for the key holder that Sister brought me back from her college study abroad in Venezuela.

The remainder of the day mostly revolved around television, and I just didn't have the heart to photograph myself, sprawled across the couch, mindlessly absorbing Glee, How I Met Your Mother, and Top Chef... all as a warm-up for tonight's main event - Jim and Pam's wedding on The Office!!!! So you'll have to just imagine that image... Happy Thursday :)

Updates from Around the Globe

*NavyGuy has a HUGE test tomorrow. Basically, he has to know every tiny minute detail about the Prowler airplane. I think he's ready for it (whereas, I still have trouble differentiating a Prowler from a helicopter), however, he's uber nervous - which is cute - except, when he gets nervous he likes to tell me things about airplanes and flying and science and NOVA episodes and computers ... which is less cute.

*My sister-in-law has been attacked by germs! She has come down with not only swine flu, but pneumonia as well! I know - you can't make this shiznit up. Makes me feel bad for wallowing and carrying on for five days when I had a sore throat. SIL is surviving (girl has some good Midwestern blood in her veins), but it still stinks big time. Let's all send her some happy thoughts (and anti-bacterial wipes) so she can kick these germies where the sun don't shine.

*Brother-in-Law got a job offer from a law firm in Chicago! I'm still low on details (Sister, I probably should have asked more than, "so you guys will definitely be living in the Midwest, right?" when we chatted), but apparently this is very good news that he's been offered a job already. They won't be moving for a few years (I still don't quite understand how you go searching for lawyer jobs when you have two years of law school left...), but regardless, BIL got a job offer!!! Whoo hooo!!! That means Sister is one step closer to her dream of quitting her job to raise dogs and teach night classes in organic cooking :)

That's all I have to report for the moment - any other news, happenings, debacles, or announcements our little corner of the blogosphere should know about?

Who Stole the... wait, he doesn't even know there's cookies!

NavyGuy is brilliant... BUT, not the most observant man on the planet.

Exhibit A: The new cookie jar...

The story begins with our realtor, who gave us a Pier One gift card when we closed on our house. Which I took to Pier One on Sunday. Where I picked out this white cookie jar...

Photobucket

... which I showed NavyGuy when I got home. Which he then watched me set on the kitchen counter, in PLAIN VIEW of all household occupants.

Apparently, the best place to hide a bag of Oreos in our house is IN the cookie jar. Cuz, they've sat there, untouched, since Sunday. When NavyGuy saw me buy a cookie jar.

My next project is going to be to store $20 bills in a piggy bank... he'll never suspect.

Message for NatalieW

Please don't think I've lost my mind, but all of you who aren't NatalieW are going to have absolutely no clue what this post is about. It's really just for NatalieW, someone who apparently reads this blog, lives in the area, and who NavyGuy thinks he met at a party in Anacortes once, but isn't sure... So anyway, I would simply send this message to NatalieW privately, but unfortunately, our only contact is through this blog! I have no email address for her, so this is the only surefire way I can think of to get a message to her.

So, from here on, it's probably not going to be interesting to anyone who isn't NatalieW - don't say I didn't warn you. To make up for this fake post, I'll write something else later tonight.

Okay, so... Dear NatalieW,

Hi! Thanks so much for the book club info! I checked out the website, and I'd definitely like to make the next meeting, but I'm a little confused. The website says you guys are reading The Woman in White... but also that you already discussed the book at the Sept. 1 meeting? Do you talk about the same book for several months? Or was that the book you picked to read for next month? When is the next meeting, by the way? Are they always at the Starbucks by the Thrive fitness in Oak Harbor? Lord knows I love me a good book (and a good Starbucks), so I'd love to try and make the next meeting.

Thanks so much - feel free to email or just leave a comment with any more oscwi book club info you've got!

Sincerely,

NavyWife

Weekend Update

With both weekend days free from work, it was inevitable that I would start to get a sore throat Thursday night, and have a raging case of swine flu cold by Saturday morning, thereby ruining my grand plans of mega productivity this weekend. Boo hiss. Instead of tackling many a household project, I did a good deal of lounging, reading, tv-ing, and drinking fluids. (Which, if I didn't feel so crusty, would have been a superb weekend.)

Alas, NavyGuy and I did get a few things done around the house. We're up to four pictures hung on the walls in the house, and some laundry was done. We also got free tickets to the Skagit area home tour, where local builders showcase fabulous homes they've built. We toured a beautiful two story home in Anacortes, a home originally built in 1896 that was being remodeled, and a beach house on the southern end of Whidbey Island. The remodel was interesting to see how they restored features in the home while combining modern conveniences; the beach house was cool because it was a 4500 square foot house built on a lot that was only 50 feet wide! The house was super long and narrow (see floor plans here), but the windows made the place feel really spacious (and living smack dab on the water, with sand twelve feet from your back door is sort of worth an unusual home layout). I was afraid that touring other homes would feel like cheating on our new house, or worse, that we'd suffer from buyer's remorse. But luckily, we simply picked up a few decorating ideas - no house envy here.

Back to the grind tomorrow - the literal coffee grind - with a full day of work. But I'm looking forward to Stamp Club starting up again this week, and I'm reading a really good book that will probably keep me up all night... :)

P.S. Anyone know a way to make their husband stop yelling at the football game on TV?

Tuesday Tidbits

* My sister-in-law has had two Paul Rudd sightings in the past few days. He's filming a movie with Jack Nicholson (who she's also spotted) in Philadelphia, literally right outside her apartment. My jealously knows no bounds.

* Season Six of So You Think You Can Dance starts tomorrow night!!! Of course, I have to work. (Remind me what we did before DVRs?)

* I'm in a book lull. I've started three different ones in the past few weeks and nothing is doing it for me. Suggestions?

* As I currently know many babies, I'm intrigued by the cover of this weeks Newsweek: "Is Your Baby Racist?". HistoryGirlie? TWP? MOH? Any mom opinions on this? Have you heard your little angels spouting racial slurs in between Wonder Pet songs and cow sounds? Are FlowerGirl and Kitty hiding xenophobic tendencies behind those adorable smiles? Like parents didn't have enough to worry about...

* While I've been typing this, NavyGuy has been huffing and puffing and pouting that somehow an important voicemail from our bank got deleted from the home phone. After wasting a good twenty minutes growling and muttering under his breath about this travesty, he found the missing voicemail - on his cell phone. Sigh. Head shake. One more sigh for good measure.

Easing into the week...

Mom left on a jet plane this morning after a whirlwind three days of shopping, unpacking, organizing, building furniture, hanging curtains, eating, drinking, and only a small amount of arguing (mostly between NavyGuy and myself). I'm working on sorting the photos from all of our projects and putting together some posts on the progress we've made on the house.

In the meantime, I'm spending my day catching up on some neglected tv (Mad Men!) and crafting before heading back to work tomorrow. For your enjoyment, I'll leave you with this - because it will make your Monday better.

Tuesday Tidbits

*Only in Washington, can you drive down the highway and see an orange construction sign warning of an "Ecology Crew Ahead." I can't decide if that's really cool, or a really big waste of my state tax dollars.

*Still packing. I swear, this is the last time I'm moving. Ever. No, wait. I'll relocate in the future, but I'm not taking any of my stuff. I'm simply walking out the front door of my current residence, getting on a plane, and moving into my new house where I'll buy all new stuff that someone else will unpack and put away for me. Yup, that's the plan.

*I created a small flood in the back washroom at work tonight. Apparently the drain cannot handle more than one sink being emptied at a time. Lesson learned (and wow does that water flow quickly). Luckily the floor needed a good rinse anyway.

Why is Magic Johnson shilling for Rent-A-Center? I'm completely baffled.

Don't believe me?

Proof.

I think my favorite part is the fact that they made him hold a basketball throughout the entire commercial... just in case you didn't make the connection... wait... is there a connection between basketball and renting appliances?

Also, and excuse me for lacking all tact here, but - didn't this guy announce he was HIV positive like twenty years ago? How is he still alive?

The bafflement continues.

#495

I'm not quite sure how it happened, but NavyGuy one upped me -

(An email I received today)

So this will sound absolutely absurd, but I swore I just saw your husband.

Back story: I've been following your blog for a handful of months now, seeing as I'm a Navy attachment also (but I've only recently established "follower-ship").

Anyways, I got off work in Norfolk/Virginia Beach (Virginia), and was talking with my dad when all of a sudden I yelled, "I think I just saw Marrying the Navy's husband!!"

So fast forward to now, I'm emailing a complete stranger, after months of stalking, claiming to have seen her husband, probably sounding like a loony bin, but wanted to see if I was fooled by a doppelganger...

So if you do get to talk to him, and he was in the Town Center of Virginia Beach, then - by golly - it was him.

If it wasn't him, well then it was nice to meet you. Keep up the hilarity of life. And enjoy the PacNW (I'm from Oregon). Hopefully you've gotten used to the rain. :D

Mrs. Wookie

Unbelievable. Un-be-LIEV-able!! NavyGuy got recognized!!! So not fair... I do all the hard blog work, and he gets the love. When I talked to him tonight, he confirmed the sighting; apparently, he's staying in the Town Center area, so I'm sure Mrs. Wookie saw him. He was super amused when I told him the story, and I suspect his cover (Navy hat) doesn't fit anymore now that his head has grown four sizes. Despite my tiny bit of jealously, I am floored that someone in the real world (besides my mother) reads this blog closely enough to spot NavyGuy out and about!!! Thanks for the note Mrs. Wookie, and for being a loyal reader - you definitely win reader of the year :) (And yes, we're getting used to the rain... although we could use a little more what with all the hot weather we've been having.)

Next up - paparazzi photos and stalkers!
