Cheers and Jeers

Cheers... to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! Under threat of bodily harm from HistoryGirlie, I cannot discuss any specifics of the movie until I receive word that she's seen it, but I can say that, the film rocks. NavyGuy and I saw it Friday afternoon - at the EXACT SAME TIME as my mom was seeing it in Wisconsin - crazy coincidence. Since seeing it, I've been frantically rereading book 7.

Jeers... to Marine #2. First, he's taken to wandering around the house shirtless. Man is not good looking, and tends to wear low-rise board shorts (ew, butt-crack). I'm very bummed we never instituted a "no shirt, no shoes, no service" rule in this house. Also, Marine #2 had a "lady friend" visiting this weekend, and she was less than impressive. Think ditzy college girl, with a bit of moron thrown in for good measure. I never officially met her, but my opinion of her was sealed when she called one of Marine #2's deafening burps "cool." The two of them spent the weekend making huge messes in the kitchen, working out, and watching terrible shows on TV. Hope she thought the trip was worth the airfare from Southern California. I cannot wait to move.

Cheers... to starting to pack for the big move! We're picked up some more supplies this weekend, and I tackled our coat closet in the hall. I wouldn't normally be jazzed to pack, but since it means moving away from the fraternity house we're currently in... packing is great!

Cheers... to Brother-in-Law! He made Law Review for UC Berkeley, and we're all quite impressed with his brilliance. His acceptance makes up for the fact that he spent the majority of my wedding reception reading and preparing his application... congrats!

Jeers... to the family of spiders living somewhere under my bathtub. Each morning I go into the bathroom and find one lone spider just chillin' in my tub. I squish him (or her) with a Kleenex and go on with life. But, the next morning, shock of shocks, another one turns up! This has literally happened for over a week. You would think these little boogars would start to get the hint... hang in the drain, stay alive; venture onto the tile, risk Kleenex squishing. The battle rages on.

Other cheerfulness or jeerfulness anyone would like to add?

Surely.

Surely... NavyGuy would not call me half hour after he left with the boys to go out in downtown Oak Harbor, asking me to deliver Marine #1's forgotten wallet - a thirty minute drive from home.

Surely... my wonderful fiance would not call me at 1:30am and wake me up from a deep sleep.

Surely... NavyGuy would not proceed to ask me to put on clothes, go out in the rain, and drive down to Oak Harbor (reminder, thirty minutes away) to pick him up from a night of drinking with the boys.

Surely... my thoughtful man would not call me en route and try to put drunkity-drunk drunk Marine #1 on the phone to give me directions to the house at which half the group has disappeared to.

Surely... NavyGuy would not have me pick him up on a street corner in downtown Oak Harbor like some kind of drifter.

Surely... my love and partner in life would not ask me to then drive to a second location to rescue Marines #1 and 2, plus a new straggler I've dubed "Curry Boy" for forthcoming reasons.

Surely... NavyGuy would not try to kiss me with his whiskey sodden lips!

Surely... NavyGuy and the three blasted amigos in the backseat would not sing, chatter, yell, fart, burp, attempt to engage in conversation, and/or step on my Nalgene bottles in the backseat the entire thirty minute ride home.

Surely... my fabulous fiance would intervene when Marine #3 - Curry Boy - spends half of the ride telling me of his love for curry and his interest in my tomato curry chicken recipe and his thoughts on whether Caribbean curry is better than other varieties.

Surely... NavyGuy would not do any of these things, as he is mature, responsible, kind, and wise enough to know the serious retribution that would result from the above events.

Surely... this is not how I spent my Saturday night (early Sunday morning).

Surely.

Surely.

The Story of Us

Last Saturday, NavyGuy and I reached a milestone - our 5 year anniversary. I was in Wisconsin for the actual day, and with our impending wedding costs, we kept it pretty low key this year. However, I thought I'd mark the occasion with a little trip down memory lane... the story of how NavyGuy and I became "us."

The credit (and blame) falls on my college roommie. Miss A and I met as freshmen when we were assigned as roommates. She was outgoing, I was reserved; she was confident, I was anxious; she was ready to conquer the world; I was ready to spend four years hiding in my room. Bless her heart, Miss A realized if getting me out of the room was going to be messy, then she'd bring the world to our room. And that's how NavyGuy and I met; Miss A and he had a class together, and (so the legend goes) she "brought him home" to our room one day.

I can't say I have a vidid memory of meeting NavyGuy (sorry sweetie!). Much of our first months together were spent hanging out with Miss A in the dorm room discussing everything under the sun. I do remember being intimidated by his strong political convictions (boy knows what he believes and has no qualms about sharing), not to mention his 6'4" height and flaming red hair. He lived on the floor above ours and more often than not we found ourselves going to dinner as a group, hanging out, just generally getting to know one another better.

By sophomore year, NavyGuy, Miss A, and I were a tight trio. However, Miss A found herself another man to spend some time with, so NavyGuy and I were left to spend a lot of Saturday nights missing our third musketeer. But life goes on... guys and gals came and went in both our lives. NavyGuy had a serious girlfriend for much of college, and I had a string of boys who "liked" me, but who I found flaws in and therefore dissed (Miss A kindly described me as having high standards). Regardless, throughout college, NavyGuy and I remained close; when his girlfriend couldn't accompany him to his fraternity formal, who stepped up to the plate? Oh yes, kids - here's one of our first shots together.

(Oh if only we'd known then...)

I'd be willing to bet than many around us were wondering why we didn't just cut the baloney and make it official, but it wasn't yet meant to be. Not until February of our senior year did the stars align. NavyGuy was finally single, I had finally realized how I felt, and Miss A had finally gotten sick of the two of us coming to her about the other one. Through some intense negotiations (and drinks at our college bar), Miss A convinced me to approach NavyGuy at a party that evening.

A few minutes of talking, a quick first nervous peck, and it's been smooth sailing ever since ;) (Ha!) NavyGuy and I walked around campus that night talking and pinching ourselves to see if this was really happening. The following morning, NavyGuy called my room and asked me to stop by. I was convinced that he had changed his mind or had second thoughts. Lo and behold - he feared the same of me! Apparently, because I had had a wee bit of, ahem, "liquid courage" the previous night, he was worried that I wouldn't even remember what happened! I quickly reassured him that 1) I did indeed recall the events of the previous evening, and 2) I did still want to try dating. With that settled, our dating relationship commenced, and we've celebrated that day five times since :)
(Who knew five years later we'd be taking engagement photos!?!)

A Manly Night (Belch)

Can I describe for you the last hour of my life? I sat with three boys watching Ultimate Fighting Champtionship (UFC for those in the know), eating a brat, and drinking a beer. I did not use a napkin. My pretty house has officially become taken over by farting, drinking, belching, scratching, smelly boys. Besides my highly unusual actions, how do I know this?

Well...
a) the coffee table in the livingroom is covered in XBox 360 controllers and games.
b) the fridge has two entire shelves devoted to beer.
c) it is only considered a meal if it includes meat.
d) fruit platters are not necessary, or desired, side dishes.
e) silverware is optional.
f) the television seems to only receive the following channels: Spike, FX, military channel, and ESPN.
g) apparently, watching a television show in regular broadcast quality when an HD version is available is "lunacy."
h) the only shoes that have been removed and carefully set on the mat by the backdoor are mine.
i) boxes containing kitchen items have stood unpacked in the middle of the kitchen since arriving on Monday; boxes containing DVDs were unpacked within hours.
j) it is not out of the question to consider driving twenty miles at nine o' clock at night to buy the video game Rock Band when the urge strikes.
k) also not out of the question is choosing to grill out when it's 45 degrees.
l) had I a nickel for every inch of cable or cord now running along the pretty white baseboards in this house, I could afford to pay for this house on my own!

Sigh. NavyGuy on his own is actually quite domesticated. He was well-trained and does appreciate a clean countertop and is capable of doing most household chores unsupervised (honestly, often better than I). However, when his good habits are combined with those of an undomesticated beast (aka, a single guy), all bets are off. I'm going to go scrapbook and paint my nails in an effort to gain back some lost estrogen.
