What's in a Name?

Time to throw your two cents in! NavyGuy and I are narrowing down our choices of names for the puppy... but before we reveal the short list, I wanted to give you all a chance. So leave your suggestion in the comments - what would you name a female black labrador retriever? Do you have a favorite dog name? A dog name you hate with a passion? Share the best you can come up with... and maybe your suggestion will be ringing through our neighborhood for years to come!

We picked our female lab's name from the Shakespeare play "The Merchant of Venice": Portia. We are total Shakespeare nerds and plan to name our next dog Kent after a character in "King Lear." Since you are also a book nerd, maybe you could pick a name from one of your favorite books. I'm drawing a blank on any other female names.

My vote is for a girl's name you love and wish you could name your future kid but a) NavyGuy hates the name for a kid or b) it's become a totally popular name now. I.E. I have loved the name Ava FOREVER and now it the number one name, so I'd never name my kid that, but it'd be a sweet doggie name.

My two cents,

I vote "Sally" from "When Harry Met Sally" - your favorite romantic movie as a couple. You could call her Sal, which is kinda sassy. And when she gets to be an old lady it will TOTALLY fit. I also like "Pepper," "Stormy" (although I have a friend with that name), and "Cocoa" (which is the name of a FRIENDS baby, too).

You could name the puppy after your favorite place. For instance, Ben named his family dog Cedar after Cedar Lake (the place we got married), plus the dog was Cedar-colored.

It doesn't matter to us what you name the pup, we just want to start referring to her as something other than 'Lucy's puppy cousin!' :)

I know I'm going to get some nasty looks/e-mails/vows never to talk to you again thoughts from some of your readers by saying this, but I just don't like using human names for dogs.

I know. Send the angry thoughts.

They are dogs, people. DOGS. Not humans. for example, I LOVE the name Michaela, but my sis-in-law named her DOG that. Now, that name is unusable by any little girl in the family because we'll always think of our annoying sis in law's annoying dog. I'm a big one for using dog names. My favorite dog name is Buster. For a girl, I like Fancy or Lassie. Even when the dog doesn't look like Lassie, it's a good dog girl name.

Sorry to offend, readers. But that's the way I see it. :)

(I think this feeling also comes from being a Farmer's wife. On a farm, animals aren't pets. They have a purpose. Give milk. Round up the cows. Eat the mice in the barn. If they aren't doing their purpose, they aren't worth feeding and away they go. I know, Crass, but it's the farmer's way. Which is why Farmer won't ever get an inside dog. What is the purpose of one???)

HistoryGirlie - you go! Way to take the unpopular stand :) But seriously, we have to work on Farmer so you can get a puppy someday. Or at least a pet pig!
